In stem cells, there is not much synergy between the R&D of institutions and application of industries and hence R&D innovations of technologies in applications are limited. Researchers are losing out on the opportunity to provide the option of innovative research to their patients. Integration with industries would create an efficient support structure that may attract more sponsors and research funding and quick translation of results.
Support internal QA/QI program
There is an urgent need to ensure internal quality assurance/improvement strategies to monitor and refine the performance of the researchers and the industrial infrastructure to maintain quality to the patients. A national or international partnered institution for collaboration in stem cells and regenerative medicine with an institution/industry would provide the necessary platform for chemistry, manufacturing and controls of the cells and in characterizing and commercializing cell-based therapies to provide ultimate benefit and necessary services to the industry, institution and the patients at large.
Needs for financial supports:
Globally lot of R&D has taken place in stem cells and regeneration technologies, both at the institution levels for innovation and active participation of industries in taking these technologies further for application. A number of technologies developed are being used as products and technologies for application in various disease conditions. While research institutions may have plenty of opportunities of funding and carrier development, there is not much opportunity available for industry. Very few industries have R&D in the stem cells area in the country as the national guidelines are restrictive in therapeutic use of cells and the industries have apprehensions of returns. They are dependent on the R&D in the institutions and have to wait for proven indigenous technologies. The conference would promote international partnership and open up more avenues for generating resources and financial support for research and collaboration.
Adoption of new technologies
As the scientific community globalizes, there are better opportunities for international collaborations for quality stem cell research and applications and adoption of new technologies.Discussions on emerging new technologies and analytical methods, cell processing, scalability, bioreactors, next-generation production technologies, automation, closed systems, supply chain and facility design may help in better understanding of the systems. Avenues would open for adoption of new technologies and next-generation cell-based therapies.
Every country follows its own guidelines to follow ‘international’ regulatory standards. A number of societies around the world are developing guidelines for regulatory capacity building. Discussions on regulatory mechanisms being followed by various organizations at the meeting may allow developing regulatory requirements for different regulatory research needs and harmonization at international level.
